A WIPO media release informs us that the number of countries that have so far committed themselves to the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances has risen to eight, now that Chile has become the first Latin American state to sign up and Qatar has joined Syria and the United Arab Emirates in boosting commitment in the Middle East.
The full list of notifications can be checked here. So far the only European country to step forward and sign up is the Slovak Republic. By Article 26 of the Treaty, it comes into force three months after 30 "eligible parties" have signed up for it.
By a curious coincidence this is the second time this week that Chile and Qatar -- literally continents apart in terms of geography, religion, economy, climate and practically everything else -- have shared the same news item, this being the first.
